Best Things to Do in Amsterdam
Europe is one of my favorite destinations to enjoy during summer and this 2016 I will be traveling in several cities and festivals that I will gladly share with you.
My first destination has been Amsterdam, this city is the capital of the Netherlands and is characterized by its beautiful canals, coffee shops, its red light district and the many bars / restaurants that you can reach on foot, by bicycle or by boat.
I will begin by describing the city which is to the northwest of Europe:
The river Amstel ends in the city centre and connects to a large number of canals, which are used for transport or even housing.
It is highly recommended to enjoy a tour through the channels to know from this perspective the city or you can also rent a bicycle as it is one of the most used means of transportation.
When touring the city you can experience some of the traditional Amsterdam dishes. For breakfast if you like something sweet, I recommend the famous Poffertjes that are a type of mini pancakes or hotcakes with butter and glacé sugar, which can be obtained in any local market or in pancake shops that are found throughout the city.
Another option is the Stroopwafles that are two wafles stuck with honey, these are obtained in any supermarket or store of desserts and ice cream but they usually come already packed, but the best ones are the recently made in one of the local markets.
Another typical dish you will find in many street stalls is raw herring which is a type of fish very common in the sea of the Netherlands.
And finally if you are looking for a snack for any time of the day, you can try the "dutch fries" or fries that are sold in many places and are usually accompanied with mayonnaise or any other type of dip.
Definitely the food is a great attraction in Amsterdam but the establishments that attract more tourists from all over the world are its famous "coffee shops". Coffee shops are cafes where you can legally purchase marijuana and marijuana products (like the space cake: marijuana cake), there are more than 200 establishments in the city and the only rule is that you should not consume alcohol or mix with any other narcotic.
A marijuana joint is very affordable, and is very safe its consumption in addition to having high standards of quality. Because marijuana is legal, there is no drug-related violence or robbery, a learning for other countries.
Other famous establishments in Amsterdam are the showcases of the Red Light District where prostitution is allowed, the showcases are rented by each prostitute and they decide the rate and time for their services with any interested. An example would be 50 euros for 15 minutes. Prostitution in Amsterdam is not enforced so there is no human trafficking and income is only for women who practice it.
Other establishments that you will find in the Red Light District are the Casa Rosso, which are clubs where you pay to enter and consume drinks while watching sexual acts and shows between couples.
If you want to have fun with some drinks or dance at night, Amsterdam also have many bars and nightclubs of different types. Some of them are considered the best in the world for their abstract concepts and intended to change a little the routine of the classic bar or club as it is De School a nightclub inside an old school combined with abstract art of lights or Paradiso a nightclub inside an old church.
Some interesting activities you can do during the day are to visit the famous Anne Frank house, the historical area known as Begijnhof with some of the oldest houses in Amsterdam, rest in Vondelpark which is the most famous park in Amsterdam, visit the Central train station with Thin Bridge and Seven Bridges which are among the most photographed places.
Thanks to the beautiful scenery and open culture, there are many interesting art exhibitions and museums all over Amsterdam. Currently there is an exhibition of Banksy and Warhol in MOCO, also you can visit the Van Gogh Museum and you should not miss the most emblematic museum in Amsterdam: Rijkmuseum with the icon of "I Amsterdam".
As you will see Amsterdam is a very beautiful city with a very open mind culture being an example of how issues such as drugs or prostitution can be managed for the benefit of a better society, and also you can find lot of party and dishes that you will surely enjoy. Amsterdam is a city not to miss and that you will want to visit again and again.
